If you’ve ever walked into a beautifully designed space in Doha and stopped to admire a wall of greenery, there’s a good chance you stood there wondering; is that real?
It’s one of the first questions people ask us. And it leads to a bigger one: what’s actually the difference between preserved, artificial, and live green walls? And more importantly which one is right for your home, office, or project?
We get this question every single week. So instead of answering it one client at a time, we put everything in one place. No sales pitch, just the honest breakdown.
First, let’s quickly define all three

1. Preserved green walls
These use real plants but they’ve gone through a natural preservation process that replaces the plant’s moisture with a food-safe glycerin solution. The result? Plants that look and feel completely natural, stay vibrant for years, and need zero watering, zero sunlight, and zero maintenance.
Preserved green walls are what Asta specialises in. They’re real plants that essentially live forever without any care.
2. Artificial green walls

Made from high-quality UV-resistant synthetic materials silk, polyester, or plastic are designed to mimic the look of real plants. They’re durable, weather-resistant, and work well outdoors. At a glance, a premium artificial wall is hard to distinguish from the real thing.
3. Live green walls

These are living, growing plants typically mounted in modular panels with an irrigation system and sometimes grow lights. They’re the most visually dynamic option, but they require ongoing care: watering, fertilising, pruning, and sometimes professional maintenance contracts.
The honest comparison
Maintenance: how much effort are you signing up for?
This is where the differences are most dramatic.
Preserved walls: Zero maintenance. No watering. No sunlight needed. No fertiliser. You install it and forget it for years.
Artificial walls: Essentially zero maintenance too. Occasionally wipe down with a damp cloth to remove dust. Outdoors, they handle Qatar’s heat and humidity without issue.
Live walls: High maintenance. They need a reliable irrigation system, regular pruning, fertilising, and monitoring for pests or disease. In Qatar’s climate, this isn’t trivial you’re fighting against extreme heat, low humidity, and harsh sunlight. Many clients end up paying for ongoing maintenance contracts, which adds up.
Verdict: If low maintenance is a priority (and for most of our clients in Qatar, it is), preserved or artificial wins easily.
Appearance: which looks best?
Preserved: Looks 100% natural because it is. Touch it and it feels like a real plant. The texture, colour variation, and organic irregularity are exactly what you get from nature. It’s the most convincing option by far.
Artificial: Premium artificial panels look impressive, especially from a distance. Up close or when touched, most people can tell the difference. That said, modern UV-resistant materials have come a very long way a well-installed artificial wall looks genuinely beautiful.
Live: Nothing beats the freshness of real living plants. Watching them grow and change gives a space genuine energy. When maintained well, a live wall is stunning.
Verdict: For indoor luxury settings villas, hotel lobbies, boardrooms preserved wins on appearance. For outdoor commercial settings where scale and durability matter more, artificial is often the smarter choice.
Durability: how long will it last?

Preserved: Typically 5 to 10+ years with no maintenance at all, as long as it’s kept away from direct water and excessive humidity. For most indoor spaces in Qatar, that’s no issue.
Artificial: 7 to 10+ years, especially the UV-resistant outdoor panels. They won’t fade, wilt, or deteriorate.
Live: Lifespan depends entirely on care. Without consistent maintenance, plants can die within months. With a proper maintenance setup, a live wall can last indefinitely but the cost and effort are ongoing.
Verdict: All three can last long-term. Preserved and artificial require nothing from you after installation. Live walls require consistent investment.
Cost: what should you actually budget?
This is the question everyone has but nobody answers directly. Here’s our honest take for Qatar:
- Preserved green walls: Generally a mid-to-premium investment. You pay more upfront, but you pay nothing in maintenance for years. For luxury interiors, it’s often the most cost-effective long-term choice.
- Artificial green walls: Usually the most accessible entry point. Great ROI for large surface areas, outdoor settings, or commercial projects where covering space efficiently matters.
- Live green walls: Often similar to preserved in installation cost, but with added ongoing maintenance expenses such as irrigation systems, professional plant care, replacement of plants that don’t survive. Total cost over 3 to 5 years is typically the highest.
Note: Every project is different. Size, plant selection, structural requirements, and location all affect the final number. We always provide a custom quote and not a generic price list.
Qatar’s climate: what actually survives here?

This is the factor most people overlook. Qatar’s summers are brutal temperatures regularly exceed 45°C outdoors, and indoor AC creates very low humidity environments that stress live plants.
Preserved walls: Completely unaffected by climate. They’re not alive, so heat, humidity, and AC have no impact.
Artificial walls: Also unaffected. Our outdoor UV-resistant panels are specifically designed for Gulf climates.
Live walls: Require careful plant selection and a reliable irrigation system. Not impossible, but it demands expertise and commitment. Many species that thrive in Europe or Southeast Asia simply won’t survive a Doha summer without significant intervention.
Verdict: For outdoor spaces in Qatar, artificial is almost always the practical choice. For indoor luxury spaces, preserved is the premium solution that eliminates all climate-related risk.
So which one should you choose?
Here’s a simple way to think about it:
- Choose preserved if you want the look and feel of real plants, zero maintenance, and a long-lasting installation for an indoor luxury space villa, office, hotel, restaurant.
- Choose artificial if you need to cover a large outdoor area, need UV-resistant durability, or are working with a budget that makes preserved less practical.
- Choose live if you have a dedicated maintenance plan (or budget for one), want the energy of genuinely growing plants, and are committed to the ongoing care they need.
Most of our clients in Qatar end up going preserved for indoor spaces and artificial for outdoor installations. That combination gives you the best of both worlds with premium aesthetics inside, durable performance outside.
